Open Enrollment Is Coming. Here’s What to Know.
Open enrollment starts November 1. Three things matter most this year.
1. Costs are going up.
Marketplace insurers are asking for increases of about 15% on average. In Tennessee, the requests range from about 10% to 29%. Job-based plans are rising too, and many employers are raising deductibles. Final rates aren't set yet.
2. Sign up by December 15.
You have until January 15, but a plan chosen after December 15 doesn't start until February 1.
3. DPC and HSAs now work together.
Under a new federal law, you can have a direct primary care membership and still contribute to a health savings account (HSA). The membership has to be $150 a month or less and cover primary care only. You can also pay for it from your HSA with pre-tax dollars. Every Groundwork membership is under that limit.
What this means for you
Plans with higher deductibles have lower monthly premiums. Pair one with an HSA and a membership, and your everyday care is covered by the membership. Insurance is there for the big stuff.
This isn't right for everyone. If you have a lot of ongoing medical needs, or couldn't cover a large deductible, a lower-deductible plan may be the better choice. DPC is not insurance.
